GEKKO was launched in Japan 2002, armed with high quality material and well-established design. GEKKO’s challenge and pursuit of material development is a true artisan spirit and craftsmanship. GEKKO combines denim with diamonds, platinum, and silver to create their brand concept of “HIGH-END CASUAL.” Usually, casual items tend to be cheap, but GEKKO’s core concept is to turn the casual item into high-end. The denim line, the core of GEKKO’s high-end casual collection, is developed with superior spinning technology and manufactured in Okayama Prefecture world famous for denim materials and production.
Okayama is also the hometown of GEKKO’s Creative Director, Yuji Hasegawa, which made it inevitable for him to draw from these surroundings when he created GEKKO. Hasegawa established GEKKO after 3 years of experience under Yohji Yamamoto, where he took part in launching numerous brands at the couture maisons in Paris. The experience and creativity of Hasegawa allowed him to direct his team of professionals to be the first to weave denim fabric with platinum thread to make GEKKO’s signature creation “PLATINUM DENIM.”
The denim fabric used on GEKKO is 100% genuine Cameroon Cotton which is rated as the most premier denim material in the world surpassing the flexibility of Zimbabwe’s cotton often woven in Okayama.
Handpicked in Cameroon, the super long cotton slubs are distinguished by their superb stretching ability and high water absorption capacity, which create a perfect fit with the very best natural materials. In addition to denim pants, GEKKO uses sleeve garment tailoring techniques to create a 3-dementional cut of the perfect man’s silhouette that combine elegance and unwearying material to complete a perfect denim jacket.
GEKKO’s persistence to intensive comfort has made it the top brand representing Japan in high-end casual denim.
The official brand name is 8010 GEKKO. In Japan, the word “GEKKO” means “Light of the Moon.” Around 200 years ago Japan was the land of the Samurai, a country where people wore straw sandals and carried swords in their traditional cotton kimonos. Today, Japan has been westernized, a place that has a state-of-the-art railroad system, a world-leading automobile industry, fashion, and IT technology. If we think of this westernization as the Sun, the brand of Gekko is the soft light that reflects this westernization as a new creation in the same way the moon reflects the sun’s light. This is the origin of the name “GEKKO”.
